Home Recording Weekend Intensive
October 21st and 22nd, 2023

Join us at Big Orange Sheep for a this in-person event in Brooklyn, NY, perfect for anyone interested in home recording.

Learn the ins and outs of setting up your own home studio, from choosing the right equipment to capturing professional-quality sound. The workshop will guide you through the process, sharing tips and tricks along the way.

Head Engineer and owner of Big Orange Sheep, Chris Benham teaches this hands-on weekend covering:
  • what equipment you'll need and how it works, 
  • how to set up your studio and treat it for sound, 
  • how to approach the recording process
  • and an introduction to editing, mixing and mastering you projects.

Network with fellow music enthusiasts, exchange ideas, and collaborate on projects. This event is a great opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who share your passion for music and recording.

Agenda:

Day 1: Getting Set Up
​

10:00 - 12:30: Equipment
Learn about the equipment you will need by following the a sound wave’s journey through each piece of gear from the microphone all the way back to the studio monitors. During this trip you will interact with each component to learn what it does and how to use it.

12:30 - 1:30 Lunch
There is a fantastic food hall located on the Industry City campus a short walk from the studio. https://industrycity.com/collections/food-hall

​1:30 - 4:00: Your Studio
Address the acoustical environment of your studio by learning how professional recording studios treat and sound proof their facilities. Then, learn how that can be applied to your studio at home.

Day 2: Recording

10:00 - 12:30: Recording
Time to set up a mic, set a level and get a sound! You’ll learn how to get a session up on you computer, basic microphone techniques, how to set levels, and the ins and outs of a typical recording session. 
12:30 - 1:30 Lunch

1:30-2:30 Mock Recording Session
You’ll put what you’ve learned to the test! As a class, we’ll set up a session from scratch and record something!
2:30 - 4:00 Editing, Mixing, Mastering, Deliverables
​Once you have something recorded, you’ll need to know how to edit, mix and send it out into the world.  This last segment will familiarize you with the basics of taking raw tracks and mixing them into a final product. You’ll also be introduced to which types of files to use in different situations.  After that, you’re assignment is to get home and put that studio together!
